The National Gallery in wartime . In the summer of 1940 the outlook seemed bleak for the Allies in mainland Europe. The British army had been forced into retreat at Dunkirk, whilst France and the Low Countries fell to Germany. The invasion of Britain looked imminent, so a plan was needed to protect the national art collection. A new home. In 1831 Parliament agreed to construct a building for the National Gallery at Trafalgar Square. There had been lengthy discussion about the best site for the Gallery, and Trafalgar Square was eventually chosen as it was considered to be at the very centre of London. The new building finally opened in 1838. Next: A Gallery for all. When the Gallery was founded in 1824, the first 38 paintings came from the private art collection of the banker John Julius Angerstein. Our world-class collection of paintings has grown considerably over the last two centuries. Today, we have over 2,300 works, spanning the major traditions of Western European painting. The National Gallery is free to enter, and is open every day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (except on January 1st, December 24th, December 25th and December 26th). The National Gallery stays open later on Fridays (until 9 p.m.) The National Gallery hosts ten-minute talks by art experts which take place from Monday to Friday at 4 p.m.
